As a promoter in California I have manged to bring the reggae dancehall scene to Hollywood with my ‘Rock Jamaica’ events. However 2009 saw a steep reduction in interest for reggae club events on the west coast unless we played a substantial amount of hip or had a known act such as Damian Marley.

Last years reggae record sales were dismal and probably the worst the industry had ever seen. Yes its true foreigners don’t understand dancehall but there are artists such as Shaggy and Sean Paul who have had huge success. This is because their music is focused on party vibes that people can dance to in clubs and the music makes them feel good. The exact opposite of what todays dancehall heroes are putting out. It has been our pleasure at Free i Entertainment to have brought you a party week this year since May 19th when we kicked off ‘Reggae on the Roof’ at Kress every Tuesday for the Summer months. Our goal this year was to bring the Jamaican vibe to the real Hollywood scene and we think that was accomplished. No other reggae party has ever merged the authentic uptown Kingston scene into Hollywood’s ‘A’ list night life as was done with ‘Rock Jamaica’ this year. Rock Jamaica is proud to host the album release party for Chali 2Na formerly of the hip hop group Jurassic 5 this coming Tuesday July 7th on the roof top of Kress in Hollywood. July 7th is the same day the album drops so it’s going to be a great vibe on the roof especially once Chali takes the mic to perform some of the new tracks from the album. The Rock Jamaica family got to know Chali when he was in Jamaica working on the track ‘Guns Up’ produced and featuring Damian & Stephen Marley.

This Tuesday @ Kress LA’s Premier Reggae party, Rock Jamaica, will be celebrating with Director David F. Mewa. David accepted the nomination for his first Much Music Video Award (MMVA) for the breakout music video FAMOUS – AIN’T NO USE. Join us to meet & learn about Davids upcoming film projects.

David is currently based in Los Angeles, but he grew up in Toronto and has is roots in Jamaica. Rock Jamaica is all about promoting upcoming artists especially when they have Caribbean ties like we do. This industry is filled with very talented artists from all over the Caribbean and we look forward to putting them in front of our fan base on a consistent basis. MUCH MUSIC honors the best in Canadian and international music videos annually in a nationally televised award show that draws thousands to its outdoor celebration.
