Distant Relatives tops Billboard Reggae

The Marley names continues to dominate the Billboard Reggae Albums chart for this week.

The name accounts for three of the albums on this week’s top 10. Leading the list of Marleys is Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley, whose collaboration, Distant Relatives, with US hip hop artiste, Nas, continues to hold on to the No 1 spot after 13 weeks on the chart. Distant Relatives is also charting on other Billboard charts. On the Top 200 it holds No 93; No 18 on the R&B /Hip Hop Album charts and No 11 on the Rap Albums charts.

Sean Paul Billboard Reggae Artiste of the year/decade

Music ‘bible’, Billboard, lists Sean Paul as the reggae artiste of the year and decade, whilst Shaggy’s Hotshot was listed as the 15th most selling album of the 2000s.

Paul beat Matisyahu and Bob Marley & the Wailers for second and third respectively for 2009 artiste of the year based on just released chart data from Billboard, the US based music company. Continue reading

Top 25 Reggae Albums of the Decade

The top 25 reggae albums for this decade — which ends December — was dominated by Shaggy but other dancehall artistes ranked highly, according to a list compiled by Splash.

Topping the list was Shaggy’s 2000 release Hot Shots which sold over ten million copies and was amongst the most sucessful albums of the decade. Matisyahu was second, but he also made the top 25 three times. Shaggy, Sean Paul, Sizzla, Beenie Man, UB40 and Damian Marley each made the list twice.

Music rankings are always controversial but Splash arrived at the findings, not by public opinion, but by analysing Billboard Reggae Album charts between 2000 to 2009 and ranked albums in order of weeks charted. Chart longevity indicated that the albums were not only popular but had that timeless quality as sales continued well beyond their release dates. Continue reading

It has been our pleasure at Free i Entertainment to have brought you a party week this year since May 19th when we kicked off ‘Reggae on the Roof’ at Kress every Tuesday for the Summer months. Our goal this year was to bring the Jamaican vibe to the real Hollywood scene and we think that was accomplished. No other reggae party has ever merged the authentic uptown Kingston scene into Hollywood’s ‘A’ list night life as was done with ‘Rock Jamaica’ this year. Jr Gong, Nas for National Geographic Event

American rapper Nas and Reggae’s Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley thrilled audiences in Montego Bay this past summer as their performed together giving a snippet of what is to come on their upcoming project, Distant Relatives.

Now, internet reports are indicating that in keeping with the album’s union of Hip Hop and Reggae music and culture, the duo has joined National Geographic for a Distant Relatives event.
