Bob Marley 67th Bday today. A look back…

Today, Bob Marley would have turned 67 years old. There will be several events around the world marking the reggae legend’s birthday. In December 1976, Marley was involved in a tragic incident in which he, his wife Rita, manager Don Taylor, and a friend, were shot at his Hope Road home. Reporter Leslie Miles, then working with the Daily News, was at the house that evening. He recounts the episode in an interview with the Observer’s reporter Basil Walters last week.

ON December 3, 1976, two days before the ‘Smile Jamaica’ concert organised by Prime Minister Michael Manley, tragedy struck in the country’s capital.

Reggae star Bob Marley, main act for the Heroes Circle event, was shot at his Hope Road home.

‘BUJU Banton’ is facing further woes after James Mack, the second co-defendant in the drug case against him yesterday signed a plea bargain deal with the United States District Attorney, agreeing to testify against the Jamaican reggae singer.

Mack’s deal comes five days after another co-defendant, Ian Thomas, also agreed to give evidence against the four-time Grammy nominee whose correct name is Mark Myrie. Continue reading

Distant Relatives tops Billboard Reggae

The Marley names continues to dominate the Billboard Reggae Albums chart for this week.

The name accounts for three of the albums on this week’s top 10. Leading the list of Marleys is Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley, whose collaboration, Distant Relatives, with US hip hop artiste, Nas, continues to hold on to the No 1 spot after 13 weeks on the chart. Distant Relatives is also charting on other Billboard charts. On the Top 200 it holds No 93; No 18 on the R&B /Hip Hop Album charts and No 11 on the Rap Albums charts.
