UIM for the Future

Black Diamon, whose real name is Shawn Myrie, is a new shining sensation in dancehall and is one to look out for. The producer/artiste is a past student of Campion College who went to further his education at a Canadian University. With a degree in Psychology, Diamon still could not resist his calling for music and decided to pursue his musical passion.

The Singjay describes himself as “the new sound of dancehall”; a fusion between Hip Hop, R&B and Dancehall. This has been manifested in his numerous collaborations with foreign acts such as Yung Berg and Purple City. As it relates to local talent, Black Diamon has worked with the likes of Gyptian, Bassy from TOK, Konshens and many others.

His most memorable experience as an artiste was his performance in Hawaii at a Ziggy Marley concert. Although he is yet to hit the big stages in Jamaica, Diamon has been increasing his fan base by performing at many school events, such as the St George’s College and Wolmer’s BBQ. “I understand that it is a work in process and I plan to touch every event in 2011,” Diamon said.

When not in studios, Diamond is either at home with his family or tending to some plants; “I’m a gardener as well.”

Black Diamon is also co-owner of the Up-tempo International Music label which, along with Andrew “Anju Blaxxx” Myrie and T’Jean Bennett, has been doing some excellent work with many artistes. The record label has been around for about three years. The first studio was established after the sale of their sound system by the same name. Since then, UIM has been making waves in the dancehall with productions such as the hit Fresh to Death riddim, a co-production of the Purge riddim with Roach, numerous mix tapes and their latest release; the Sanction riddim which was launched on December 1, 2010. Featured on the rhythm are artistes such as Beenie Man, Konshens, D’Angel, Cherine Anderson and Nicky B among others.

The music label has some artistes of its own; Hardrive and Kaely B are also signed to the label but according to the producers, Black Diamon is the main focus at the moment. They are also in the process of adding females to the label and as such are searching for fresh female talent. Fresh talent, the producers told TEENage, are easier to work with and are more likely to have good work ethics. Outside of working with artistes, the label has also been doing audio works for Production Lab Company.
