TORONTO (Fortune) — Is reggae superstar Bob Marley bigger than Jesus? That’s debatable, but the music legend who died 28 years ago is about to challenge Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson for the title of richest dead celebrity.
Toronto-based private-equity firm Hilco Consumer Capital has struck a management deal with the Marley estate, which is expected to generate worldwide annual sales in excess of $1 billion by 2012. American rapper Nas and Reggae’s Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley thrilled audiences in Montego Bay this past summer as their performed together giving a snippet of what is to come on their upcoming project, Distant Relatives.
Now, internet reports are indicating that in keeping with the album’s union of Hip Hop and Reggae music and culture, the duo has joined National Geographic for a Distant Relatives event.

International reggae artiste Buju Banton, who this week met with gay activists in San Francisco, says he will not “surrender” to the group’s philanthropy proposals as they would contradict his religion and culture.
Banton also said his concert that night was pepper-sprayed following the meeting with the gay lobby.
After being dogged by gay rights advocates for the past two months, singjay Buju Banton reportedly met with members of a local group in San Francisco on Monday.
The local CBS television affiliate said members of the group spoke to Banton at the hotel he was staying, ahead of his show at the Rockit Room.
“It was a good meeting today. It was cathartic, I think for the artiste because he had never met with representatives of gay organisations. Not in America, not in Jamaica,” said Bevan Dufty, one of two San Francisco city supervisors who attended the meeting. Read more »
